Old-Fashioned AdWords

In the early days of AdWords we used to use the Overture Search-Term Suggestion Tool to generate large lists of keywords which would go into one or two ad groups with one or two ads.

This approach might not get very good results, but at least it would work in terms of getting your campaign up and running.

And the competition was not as fierce then as it is now, with click costs as high and Google on full alert to defend their reputation.

Is Your AdWords Account At Risk?

If you have been warned for repeated violations of poor landing page Quality Score, your AdWords account is on the brink of being Suspended.

Google’s system is automated, with no appeal even to Agency Relationship Managers (not the Call Centre Staff).

The thing is, it’s not necessarily your Landing Pages that are at fault.

    Just got an email from a client who’s had
    their (new) account closed by Google for promoting
    purely amazon based products.

    This makes no sense to me.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Hi Mike,

    It’s no secret that the world of affiliate marketing using Google AdWords is getting harder all the time.

    And that Google is cracking down very heavily on anything being promoted that is in any way “sleazy”, or violating recent FTC rulings on re-billing or other products and services that have received complaints to them.

    Now, I know Amazon products don’t fall into that category. And I’d really need to know more about his campaigns and how they are set up, like

    - direct linking or his own landing pages
    - keywords and ad texts in use
    - general structure

    Google is moving more into the Affiliate Marketing world all on their own, with Merchant Centre products for instance, and using the PlusBox and product images more.

    They also have introduced Commerce Search for e-commerce site owners, and have their own purely CPA-based sales promotions (think no more click fraud).

    So although it’s not stated anywhere (I haven’t really searched around), seems to me that unless you’re getting traffic other than AdWords to your own pages (organic rankings, social links etc), the days of buying traffic for offers other than Google’s own affiliate/e-commerce promotions may be numbered.

    Thoughts, comments, observations welcome. And let me know more about your client’s campaign setup as it may help shed further light.

    What is his marketplace? Typical keywords and ad?

    And what was the notification message and explanation Google gave?

    The original person who contacted me hasn’t got back in touch
    but a second person in the same position has.

    New account, amazon only products, direct linking only…closed account.

    “account has been suspended.
    They told me that i didn’t comply with their terms and conditions”

    Has Google gone mad?

  6. Hi Mike,

    I would say, not “gone mad” – rather, “got mad”. Terminal mad.

    The Internet is littered with similar stories, so something big is going on here.

    I think they are now completely fed up that their machine, which was designed for a high purpose (and by Engineers, don’t forget) has for years been ruthlessly exploited by clever Marketers to “sell stuff”.

    We’ve seen (those of us with 5 years or so experience) several *fundamental* changes to the way their machine works since Affiliates got heavily involved. (Think “Google Cash”).

    Google will take the money, but only for as long as their brand doesn’t start getting heavily tarnished. Then – run for cover…

    Don’t forget that Google is hugely automated, and that means there’s a lot of collateral damage going on here catching people who are on the outer edges of this whilst the main perpetrators are being taken down.

    Unfortunately there’s no recourse from Google once you’ve been banned, short of starting completely afresh and hoping you won’t get caught again.

    I have a colleague who is still doing fine with his Amazon strategy, I am working with him to see what we can learn.
