Does position #1 for Google Ads refer to the top ad above the organic search results, or the top ad in the column of ads on the right side of the search page? I wasn't sure where the numbering system started. Thanks.

Position number 1 refers to the right-hand side of the page.

There can be up to 8 ads per page of search results.

There can be literally an infinte number of ads, you can see these by going to the next page of search results, and the next, etc.

There are also three places at the top of the page where ads can appear.

These are premium listings which high-performing or high bid ads can be displayed.

(You can actually get there immediately by simply hiking your bid price. If you know your numbers, you can do this safely. It can result in an immediate, large change to the ad landscape - try it and see!)

Google Analytics illustrates the possible ad positions, known as T1, T2, T3, at the top, as well as Side 1-8

Next you can see an ad languishing at position 401 (so it's effectively invisible) as an illustration of how many competitor ads there can be in a marketplace - so pick your battles carefully!
